High-level disinfection - peracetic acid Surface disinfection

PAA Disinfectant Products PAA, also known as peroxyacetic acid, is an organic compound with the following chemical structure: PAA is a product of the reaction between acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide (hydrogen peroxide), which comes commercially in a balance between PAA, acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide. Thanks to its high oxidative potential in the outer membrane of bacteria, endospores, fungi, viruses and yeasts, it has many industrial applications as a disinfectant in the food industry and also in laundry and water and sewage treatment. Its oxidation mechanism consists in the transfer of electrons from the oxidized form of the acid to the microorganisms, causing its inactivation. The biocidal efficacy, the absence of residues and the easy application in aqueous solution make PAA an increasingly necessary antimicrobial in the food and beverage industries. There are different formulations that include PAA as an active substance and that can be used for surface disinfection. The most relevant PAA formulations contain PAA and hydrogen peroxide as active substances. In addition, viricidal efficacy tests are indicated for some of these products. The viricidal efficacy of the peracetic acid-based detergent was tested against Adenovirus, Influenza H1N1, Influenza H5N2, Poliovirus and Vaccinia, using EN14476 (quantitative suspension test to evaluate viricidal activity in medicine) and EN17111 (quantitative carrier assay for evaluation viricidal activity of instruments used in the medical field). The formulations must be diluted in water in the proportions indicated in the corresponding technical information. In any case, the instructions and precautions detailed in the technical data sheets and safety data sheets for each product must be followed.
